Revitalising the Nilgiri
Biosphere Reserve

The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve
The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is part of the Western Ghats in South India. It is the largest protected forest area in the country, spanning across the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Covering over 5,000 square kilometers, the hill ranges of the Nilgiris and their surrounding environments were designated as the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in September 1986 under the Man and Biosphere Programme. It is India’s first and foremost biosphere reserve, with a rich heritage of diverse flora, fauna and communities.
